Towns of South-East Spain - Costa Blanca North
Calpe
Calpe
is a coastal village, once an ancient fishing town in Costa
Blanca North just south of Javea and north of Altea. It can
be reached either by the A-7 highway or the N-332 coastal
road and it takes about 35 minutes by car to reach Alicante
airport, It’s famous for the huge rock of over 330 meters
in height - Penon de Ifach. The summit of the rock is reached
by a tunnel through the rock. From here, magnificent panoramic
views can be had. On a clear day you can see Ibiza.
The church Senora de las Nieves is located in the center
of Calpe and Calpe's archeological museum can be found just
opposite the church at the plaza de la villa and alongside
you find ruins of the Romans and the ruins of the bano de
la reina, together with rests of an old tower, the torreon
de la peca. There is a mixture of old Valencian culture and
modern day tourism in the town with a lovely modern marina,
a magnet for visitors.
Calpe has 4 good beaches in all. The 2 fine sandy beaches,
the Cantal Roig and the Playa Arenal, and La fossa and the
bay of Gasparet which also belongs to the city. This is great
surfing territory and there are excellent water sports facilities
all around and you can easily hire kayaks and catamarans.
One of the best ways to view the coast is on the narrow gauge
railway that runs from Denia Calpe then on to Alicante or
you can take a day trip on the boat to Benidorm. It’s
worth a trip to the tourist office in Calpe to find out about
all that’s on offer.
There are some good golf courses around, in particular the
golf resort at Muchamiel
– Bonalba Golf. There is a good quality tennis club
in Calpe and a swimming pool.
