Towns of South-East Spain - Costa Blanca South
Elche
ELCHE
(sometime referred to as Elx) is 20 km inland from Alicante
and the region's 3rd largest city. It is easy to find the
city as it’s well signposted from every direction. The
N-340 takes you directly into the city and if you are coming
from nearby Alicante Airport you’ll take the C-3317.
Elche has more than 300,000 palm trees all protected and
at their best in Huerto del Cura (Priest's Garden), where
a palm in the form of a seven-armed candelabra stands –
a fascinating freak of nature.
Elche’s municipal park is a delight and well tended
palm trees create a wonderful shady haven for picnics. The
tourist office is on the corner of the park and on the other
side of the road is the outdoor swimming pool and the sports
park where you can participate in all types of sport.
The River Vinalopo runs through Elche and it’s a good
route to follow to see the best of Elche’s tourist sights:-
Basilica, the Palacio, the Museo de la Festa and the old town
market, statue of Lady of Elche. Altamira Palace, the Basilica
of Santa Maria, the Moorish fortress and the Moorish Baths
sit in the historical old quarter of the city.
Rio Safari park in Elche has a wide range of animals, dolphin
display and swimming pools with water slides.
The outskirts of Elche are probably more popular for home
hunters as the city itself is mainly commercial rather than
residential. The suburbs and surrounding countryside offer
some interesting property options if you are looking for ‘real
Spain’ and there are some very good new developments
that we can show you if you are keen on a new property close
to a major city.
