Towns of South-East Spain - Costa Blanca North
Moraira
Moraira
is a coastal town set in a sandy bay about 90 km north of
Alicante airport and about the same distance south of Valencia
airport. It’s a mountainous region so you will get some
fantastic views of the bay as you drive down into the town.
It’s a lush, green area and very picturesque. Within
a 15 km radius you will find the lovely towns of Altea, Javea,
Calpe, and Denia and although a complete contrast to Moraira,
Benidorm is only 30km south. Moraira is well served by the
local road network and motorway access is straightforward.
The beaches are a focal point and well maintained to EEC
Blue Flag standard at all times throughout the year. The Moraira
Club Náutico was built here in 1985 and has become
an important feature of the town. The area averages 3,000
hours of sunshine each year and the average temperature is
around 20 degrees.
Originally a small fishing village Moraira retains much
of the charm from yesteryear. Fishermen still sail out in
the early hours each day to return with their catch to sell
at auction in the fish market.
Moraira has a really lovely marina around which you will
find more than a half dozen Michelin recommended restaurants
as well as some very cute bars and coffee shops. The harbour
plays host to some very good fish restaurants and it’s
a fabulous place chill out and watch folk wander by.
The weekly Friday market here is a favourite with residents
and tourists alike. You’ll be amazed at the price of
local produce compared with home prices and everything is
so lovely and fresh. Moraira is also known for the growing
of Muscatel grapes for wine making. There are some good leather
goods here and clothes are very cheap. There are a number
of gifts, jewellery and souvenirs stall as well.
There is a good mix of nationalities living in the area
with a total population around 10,000 - predominantly Spanish
people – who are always keen to use their English and
very happy to help you out with your Spanish. Moraira loves
its Fiestas and this is a great time to really mingle.
Permanent residents, holiday makers and a good many retired
people enjoy the environment and the weather here. The area
has a reputation for attracting wealthy residents and it’s
fair to say that in some parts of Moraira property prices
would indicate that to be the case. However there is a good
range of property from 1 bedroom beach apartments to tailor
made luxury villas overlooking the bay. A truly beautiful
part of the Costa.
